Nearly all of Khiva's key sights are located inside the walls of Ichan Kala, so the route works well as a loop without long transitions. Start with the Kalta Minor Minaret — its turquoise tilework is visible from almost anywhere in the old town and serves as a landmark. Nearby is the Kunya-Ark fortress, once the residence of the Khivan khans. The Juma Mosque, with its forest of carved wooden columns, is one of the most atmospheric interiors in the city and deserves dedicated time. The Tosh-Hovli Palace, with its courtyards and covered terraces, shows how the khan's family lived. It's convenient to end the walk at the Islom-Hoja Minaret, the highest point in Ichan Kala, with a view over the entire old town.
